Adaptive Apparel Design

The purpose of this product development capstone was to develop a range of adaptive apparel products crafted from cotton-rich material. These products were designed to cater to the functional, expressive, and aesthetic requirements of the users who are facing disabilities. By embracing a user-centered design approach, we collaborated directly with individuals from the PWD community, ensuring that their insights and needs were at the core of the development process.

Design Statement

The adaptive clothing market has been expanding throughout the years, however, traditional bridal attire often fails to meet the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities who wish to experience their wedding day with style and comfort. The lack of accessible wedding wear leaves many brides feeling excluded from the joyous traditions and aesthetics of their special day. By embracing the principles of inclusive designs, I have created Ophelia, a bridal collection that is dedicated to revolutionizing the bridal fashion industry by creating adaptive wedding apparel that honors the dreams and brides’ wishes.

Ophelia S/S 2024.

Ophelia is a central character in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, “Hamlet”. She is portrayed as a gentle and innocent woman, and her characters represents the oppressive constraints placed on women in the Elizabethan Era. At the very end of the play, Ophelia distributes flowers to represent different aspects of her emotions, and she gives away daisies to symbolize innocence, purity, and simplicity. Since the first time I read Hamlet, this scene has stuck with me.

When I asked my model, Libby, what was her favorite flower so I could incorporate it in the designs, Libby answered daisies and the first thing that came to my mind was Ophelia’s flower speech. For me, Libby represents daisies. She might have a disability but she still lives a pure life with much to offer.

Cotton Technologies

Traditionally, bridal fashion has been associated with luxurious and formal fabrics like silk and lace, creating a perception that cotton lacks a similar level of elegance. To counter this idea, my focus has been on creating a sophisticated and intricate cotton dress design that effortlessly combines style with comfort. Besides that, cotton stands out as an ideal solution for addressing people with disabilities apparel needs clothing due to Its hypoallergenic, soft, and sensory-friendly qualities

For this project, I picked Cotton Works™ fabrics because of their superior performance finishes and mechanical properties. The collection has a variation of cotton-based fabrics with three different technologies: Natural Stretch, PurThread® and Ionic+™

1. Natural Stretch offers superior easy-care performance. It does not lose its elasticity and remains white even when exposed to chlorine.

2. PurThread® is an antimicrobial solution that embeds recycled silver salts into polyester fibers in order to kill odor-causing bacteria. It can easily be blended with cotton to create cotton-rich blends with permanent anti-oder benefits.

3. In the extruded form of Ionic+™, positively charged silver ions are permanently embedded into the fiber or filament. The technology inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi on fabrics and keeps apparel odor-free.

Inspiration Board

When creating this collection, I wanted to make sure that the bride could wear her dress not only on her wedding day but also daily.

For a wheelchair user, it is hard to put on a dress, so I decided to make the top and bottoms separate. She will be able to attach them with a removable belt with magnets that will be placed on the top of the elastic band of each bottom. The top will also have magnets inside to attach to the bottoms.

With one top and three different bottoms, she will be able to play around and make a dress, a jumpsuit, or a jumper.

The collection also has a Reception Dress and matching pajamas
