Ophelia is a central character in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, “Hamlet”. She is portrayed as a gentle and innocent woman, and her characters represents the oppressive constraints placed on women in the Elizabethan Era. At the very end of the play, Ophelia distributes flowers to represent different aspects of her emotions, and she gives away daisies to symbolize innocence, purity, and simplicity. Since the first time I read Hamlet, this scene has stuck with me.
When I asked my model, Libby, what was her favorite flower so I could incorporate it in the designs, Libby answered daisies and the first thing that came to my mind was Ophelia’s flower speech. For me, Libby represents daisies. She might have a disability but she still lives a pure life with much to offer.
